SHIVTIWEEKLY UPDATE Purim 5782 As we approach the Yom Tov of Purim, we will digress from our regular ויבינו במקרא series to focus on Inyana D'yoma. Call our office or email us for more information. משתה ושמחה בפורים This week's sugya focuses on the least-discussed mitzvah of Purim - Mishteh V'Simcha. We discuss if the obligation of Simcha requires one to wash for bread at a seudah, similar to the chiyuv on Shabbos and Yom Tov. We also discuss the unique obligation to drink wine on Purim - is this part of the Purim Seudah, or is this a special independent obligation? We discuss why there is mitzvah to get drunk and different opinions as to how one can fulfill this chiyuv. Halachic ramifications include: eating Purim seudah on the first night, forgetting Al Hanisssim during Birchas Hamazon, getting married on Purim, the shiur of drinking, and more. משתה ושמחה בפורים מזיק בפורים This sugya discusses whether someone is required to pay compensation, should he cause damage in the course of festivities. We begin by discussing the status of a drunken person. We also discuss if there is a difference between monetary damage and physical damage. In addition, we discuss various sources from the Gemara and the poskim as to why one might be exempt from damages just because he is involved in Simcha. This discussion has many other ramifications as well, such as damaging property during a wedding, etc. Included under this topic of "leniencies due to merry-making" are normally forbidden activities such as wearing women's clothing, grabbing food from others (i.e. stealing), Shatnez D'Rabbanan, etc. Shiurim on this sugya are now available to stream or download.
