Silver encasement or velvet covering, when it comes to Torah, it’s the internal that matters

The sefer Torah held tightly in Rav Yisroel Neuman’s arms was encased in a silver, cylindrical case, not the standard royal velvet mantle, as per the custom of the Sephardic shul hosting the hachnassas sefer Torah. But that didn’t stop Rav Neuman, the venerated — and Ashkenazi — rosh yeshivah of Beis Medrash Govoha from dancing with unbridled fervor in honor of the sefer Torah and the kehillah welcoming it. Because silver encasement or velvet covering, when it comes to Torah, it’s the internal that matters.

By   Jewish Press Staff  All Credit goes to them  -   1 Heshvan 5783 – October 26, 2022   0 Share on Facebook   Tweet on Twitter       Photo Credit: 123rf.com Is It Proper For A Man To Wear A Wedding Band?   Rav Moshe Feinstein ( Igros Moshe Evan HaEzer , v. 4, 32:2) discusses whether it is permissible for a man to wear a wedding band, citing the prohibition of “ Bechukasayhem lo selechu ,” the prohibition against “walking in the way” of non-Jews, meaning following their laws and rules. He writes that this prohibition is NOT applicable here (meaning wearing the wedding band is permissible) because there is no law or statute amongst non-Jews to wear a wedding band after a man gets married. Since men who wear them only do so as an ornament, as jewelry, or to demonstrate they are married, and not in order to follow any non-Jewish practice, it is permitted. Studies Show Jews’ Genetic Similarity

That is the conclusion of two new genetic surveys, the first to use genome-wide scanning devices to compare many Jewish communities around the world. A major surprise from both surveys is the genetic closeness of the two Jewish communities of Europe, the Ashkenazim and the Sephardim. The Ashkenazim thrived in Northern and Eastern Europe until their devastation by the Hitler regime, and now live mostly in the United States and Israel. The Sephardim were exiled from Spain in 1492 and from Portugal in 1497 and moved to the Ottoman Empire, North Africa and the Netherlands.
