Throughout Sukkos, it is forbidden to use the schach and walls of the sukkah for anything that would disturb the function of the sukkah. This prohibition extends through Shemini Atzeres in Eretz Yisroel and through Simchas Torah in Chutz L’Aretz. The timing is such because a person would still have to eat in the sukkah if he wanted to have a meal during bein hashmashos of the last day of Sukkos in Eretz Yisroel or Shemini Atzeres in Chutz L’Aretz. The sukkah therefore has kedusha throughout bein hashmashos, and it retains this kedusha through the Yom Tov that follows. If Shabbos falls after Yom Tov, some are careful not to use the decorations on Shabbos.
