SHIVTI
WEEKLY UPDATE
Shivti Chanuka 5782
נר חנוכה - חובת בית או חובת גברא

This sugya discusses the actual chiyuv of Ner Chanuka. We discuss whether the obligation is on every Jew to light the menorah (similar to lulav and esrog), or is the obligation on every house to have a menorah lit there (similar to the chiyuv of mezuzah). Regarding the mitzvah of mezuzah, once there is one mezuzah on the doorway, a second one may not be put up, as the mitzvah is already completely fulfilled. Does the same hold true with regards to the Chanuka menorah in each home - and if so, how do we understand the concept of Mehadrin (lighting additional menorahs)?

Please note: if you already purchased last week's publication, there is no need to purchase it again.
ברכת שעשה ניסים
This Sugya focuses on the Bracha of She'asa Nissim that is recited when lighting Ner Chanuka. We explain the essence of this unique and rarely-recited bracha and discuss which Nissim we are referring to. We discuss the general Chiyuv (as brought down in Shulchan Aruch) of reciting a Bracha on a specific Neis - and its relevance to the current Parshiyos, in which Yosef was saved from the pit through a miracle. The Midrash relates that Yosef made the Bracha of She'asa Nissim upon returning to that location, and the Meshech Chochma (included in our booklet) parallels Yosef's Bracha to the Bracha that we recite on the Neis of Chanuka.
