SHIVTI WEEKLY UPDATE Shivti Chanuka 5782 נר חנוכה - חובת בית או חובת גברא This sugya discusses the actual chiyuv of Ner Chanuka. We discuss whether the obligation is on every Jew to light the menorah (similar to lulav and esrog), or is the obligation on every house to have a menorah lit there (similar to the chiyuv of mezuzah). Regarding the mitzvah of mezuzah, once there is one mezuzah on the doorway, a second one may not be put up, as the mitzvah is already completely fulfilled. Does the same hold true with regards to the Chanuka menorah in each home - and if so, how do we understand the concept of Mehadrin (lighting additional menorahs)?
