Under certain circumstances, forbidden matter can become nullified when it is found within a greater amount of permitted matter. If the forbidden item is a davar shebeminyan (an object which is counted individually among similar objects), however, it cannot be nullified that way. Counting an item lends to its importance and prevents it from being subsumed in a mixture. Due to the nature of the mitzvah, Chanukah candles are counted individually and do not become nullified to other candles they are mixed with. Therefore, if one Chanukah candle (which is forbidden to be used for personal benefit) gets mixed together with other candles, they are all forbidden for personal benefit.
