Daf HaYomi B'Halacha Daily Email - 9 Teves/Dec 13

Should the menorah be lit in a side room of a shul?

There is a minhag to light the menorah in shul. If a shul is only used for Ma’ariv, the poskim disagree about whether a menorah should be lit there. Some say that a workplace which has a room set aside for a steady Mincha-Ma’ariv minyan has the status of a shul regarding this halacha. The poskim also say that a menorah should be lit at the Kosel plaza, since it is an area designated for tefillah. Some shuls have a central Beis Hamedrash surrounded by smaller rooms which also house minyanim. Some poskim say that the menorah should be lit with a brocha only in the central room. Others say that a menorah should be lit in each room that has a minyan and houses a Sefer Torah.
